Hoarseness in Children

چکیده
Background: The prevalence of pediatric dysphonia ranges from 6-23%. Chronic dysphonia can negatively affect the lives of children physically, socially, and emotionally. The body of literature continues to grow regarding the pathophysiology and management of dysphonic children. Methods: This article presents a relevant literature review of vocal fold pathology leading to hoarseness and recent advances in diagnosis and management. Articles were retrieved using a selective search in PubMed employing the terms such as “hoarseness in children,” “pediatric dysphonia.” Results: 42 articles from the past decade were reviewed that include information regarding the etiology, assessment, and treatment of children with dysphonia. Conclusion: The care of a child with a voice disorder can be complex and requires a multi-disciplinary approach. Current technological, pharmaceutical, and therapeutic advances have improved the treatment of children with dysphonia.

Posterior subcapsular cataracts, bruises and hoarseness in children with asthma receiving long-term treatment with inhaled budesonide.
We assessed the effect of long-term treatment with inhaled budesonide (BUD) on the occurrence of posterior subcapsular cataracts (PSC), bruises and hoarseness in children with asthma. Slit lamp examinations were performed in 157 asthmatic children treated with inhaled BUD at a mean daily dose of 504 microg (range 189-1,322 microg) for 3-6 yrs (mean 4.4 yrs). Measurements were compared with 111 ...
متن کاملPhonetographic aspects of physiological and perceptual voice characterist
Pitch and intensify ranges of 60 children were recorded and plotted in terms of phonetograms. Different aspects of the phonetograms were investigated, such as minimum phonation threshold, pitch range, and maximum dyrramic range. The vocal cord status of all children was determined in a phoniatric examination. Seven voice experts listened to recordings of the voices and rated their properties al...
متن کاملThe Relation between Perceived Hypernasality of Cleft Palate Speech and Its Hoarseness
Formerly, we had reported that rating hypernasality of speech in cleft palate patients is affected by the presence of hoarseness, especially “rough hoarseness”. In the present study, we further investigated the effects of “breathy hoarseness”, something frequently observed in cleft palate children, on the rating of hypernasality. We also controlled the degree of breathiness by adding harmonic c...
متن کاملChildren’s vocal behaviour in a pre-school environment and resulting vocal function
This study aims to shed some light onto the relationship between the degree of hoarseness in children’s voices observed at different times during a day in pre-school and different aspects of their speech behaviour. Behavioural aspects include speech activity, phonation time, F0 variation, speech intensity and the relationship between speech intensity and background noise intensity. The results ...
متن کاملPerceptual analysis of child hoarseness using continuous scales
Fifty-eight 10-year old children were recorded and judged by a panel of voice expert listeners, who rated the voices along 26 voice parameters represented by visual analogue (continuous) scales on a test form. Interjudge reliability was high. Rank ordered rating means revealed a discontinuity i n the distribution for most parameters. A factor analysis revealed three factors of major relevance t...
